CHEMISTRY | MOLE CONCEPT | Question 27

1.63g of Zinc metal was added to excess Silver Nitrate Solution. The mass of silver formed was 5.40g.
(Zn = 65, Ag = 108)
What is the equation for the displacement reaction?
Show the working.

  • Data

    Mass of Zn = 1.63g
    Mass of Ag = 5.40g

    Asked:
    How silver was formed

    Equation
    Zn(s) + 2AgNo3(aq) → 2Ag(s) + Zn(No3)2(aq)

To convert 1.63g of Zn into moles
Mole = mass / Molar mass of Zn
    = 1.63g / 65g/mole
    = 0.025076 mole of Zn

To show mole equivalent between Zn and Ag
1 mole of Zn Ξ 2 moles of Ag
    0.025 of Zn Ξ ?? of Ag

    = (0.25 mole × 1 mole 2) / 1 mole
    = 0.05 mole
Mass of Ag = mole × molar mass
    = 0.05 × 108
    = 5.4166g

The mass of silver formed was 5.4166g
