a) What meant by the following terms

i. hydrous
ii. anhydrous

b) 5g of hydrated magnesium sulphate was placed in crucible at 100oC. After five (5) minutes, the 2g of water was evaporated.
Find:
i) mass of hydrous,
ii) mass of anhydrous salt,
iii) percentage of anhydrous.

  • Soln:

    a)
    i. Hydrous salt is the salt with water of crystallization
ii. Anhydrous salt is the salt lacking of water of crystallization.

    b)
    i. mass of sample = 5g
mass of water evolved = 2g
mass of anhydrous = mass hydrous – mass of anlydrous
    = 5g – 2g
    = 3g

The mass of anhydrous is 3g

ii. The mass of hydrous salt is 5g

iii. To find the percentage of anhydrous
    % anhydrous = (mass of anhydrous / Mass of hydrous) x 100

    = (3g / 5g) x 100
    = 60%

The percentage of anhydrous salt was 60%
